Wrong-way driver in fatal crash may have been intoxicated

One person was killed and another person was injured in a wrong-way driving accident that took place on a Texas freeway on Dec. 23. The two-car crash happened in Baytown and may have involved a drunk driver.

According to a statement from the Baytown Police Department, the fatal car accident occurred while an individual was traveling in the opposite direction of traffic on westbound East Freeway in a black Chrysler 300. At around 1 a.m., the driver struck a westbound Chevrolet Cavalier head on. Investigators suspect that the wrong-way driver may have gotten onto the freeway at North Main or Garth.

The Chevrolet driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and the Chrysler driver was taken to a hospital in Houston. So far, there have been no reports about what condition the driver was in when he entered the hospital. However, a police spokesman said that the driver would probably leave the hospital the same day that he was checked in. The spokesman also confirmed that the driver is expected to be handed criminal charges for drunk driving.

When someone is killed by a drunk driver, the deceased victim's family has the right to pursue financial compensation for their loss by filing a wrongful death claim. Because this can be a difficult time, a family may choose to seek help from an attorney while putting together a civil claim. While helping the family pursue a fair settlement, an attorney may spare family members from the tasks of gathering evidence about the accident and assessing monetary damages.
